About this Quiz

The Hamilton-Burr duel is one of the most famous duels in American history. It took place on July 11, 1804, between Alexander Hamilton, the former Secretary of the Treasury, and Aaron Burr, the sitting Vice President of the United States. The duel was the culmination of a long and bitter rivalry between the two men. The duel took place in Weehawken, New Jersey, and it ended with Hamilton being fatally wounded. He died the next day. Burr was charged with murder in New York and New Jersey, but he was never tried in either jurisdiction. The duel effectively ended Burr's political career. The duel was fought with Wogdon dueling pistols at a distance of ten paces. Hamilton's 'second' in the duel was Nathaniel Pendleton, and Burr's was William P. Van Ness. Hamilton had stated his intention to 'throw away his shot' and not aim at Burr, but it is unclear if he did so. Burr did not state his intentions publicly. The immediate reaction to Hamilton's death was public outrage and mourning. His family faced financial hardship and social ostracism after his death. Dueling was illegal in New Jersey at the time, but prosecutions were rare.
