About this Quiz
The formation of the solar system is a topic that has intrigued scientists for centuries. It is believed that our solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago from a giant molecular cloud. This cloud, known as the solar nebula, collapsed under its own gravity, leading to the formation of a rotating disk of gas and dust. This process is known as nebular contraction. The central part of the disk became increasingly dense and hot, eventually forming the Sun. The remaining material in the disk started to stick together, forming planetesimals and protoplanets, through a process known as accretion. Over time, these bodies grew and evolved into the planets, moons, asteroids, and comets that we see today. The first planet to form in our solar system was Jupiter, followed by the other gas giants and then the terrestrial planets. The last planet to form was Neptune. The asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter, was formed due to the gravitational pull of Jupiter. Beyond Neptune, there is a disk-shaped region called the Kuiper Belt, which contains many small icy bodies. Even further out, there is a hypothetical spherical shell of icy objects known as the Oort Cloud, believed to be the source of long-period comets. There is also a hypothetical planet, known as Planet X, that may exist in the outermost regions of the solar system.
