About this Quiz
The RMS Titanic, a British luxury passenger liner, embarked on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, USA, on April 10, 1912. The Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service and was the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line. The ship was designed to be the last word in comfort and luxury, with an on-board gymnasium, swimming pool, libraries, high-class restaurants and opulent cabins. The ship also had a powerful wireless telegraph provided for the convenience of passengers as well as for operational use. Despite carrying some of the wealthiest people in the world, the Titanic also carried hundreds of emigrants from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia and elsewhere throughout Europe who were seeking a new life in the United States. The Titanic's voyage did not end as it was planned. The ship hit an iceberg four days into the crossing, at 11:40 p.m. ship's time on 14 April 1912, and sank in the early morning hours of 15 April. The iceberg collision caused the ship's hull plates to buckle inwards in a number of locations on her starboard side and opened five of her sixteen watertight compartments to the sea. Over 1,500 people died in the sinking, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. The disaster shocked the world and led to widespread changes in maritime regulations, including improved safety measures for ships.
