About this Quiz
The Titanic, a British luxury passenger liner, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning hours of 15 April 1912, after it collided with an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. It was one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. The wreck of the Titanic remained lost for over 70 years until it was discovered in 1985 by a joint American-French expedition led by Dr. Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Jean-Louis Michel of the French Research Institute for Exploration of the Sea (IFREMER). The discovery of the Titanic has led to significant advancements in underwater exploration technology and has sparked ongoing research and debate about the causes and effects of its sinking. Today, the Titanic lies at a depth of about 12,500 feet (about 2.37 miles) in the North Atlantic Ocean, roughly 370 miles south-southeast off the coast of Newfoundland. It is gradually being consumed by iron-eating bacteria, which creates 'rusticles', icicle-like formations of rust.
